Princeton murder suspect, Matthew Hertgen, has attempted suicide in jail just days after he allegedly killed his brother and ate his eyeball. As his family was making preparations for his brother Joseph Hertgen's funeral on Saturday, Matthew allegedly tried to take his own life in his Mercer County Correction Center jail cell in New Jersey on Thursday night, law enforcement sources told the New York Post. The alleged criminal reportedly tried to hang himself in the cell the same day he made an initial hearing in a New Jersey court, but little more is known about his alleged suicide attempt. The 31-year-old is accused of beating the former soccer player, 27, to death with a golf club and a knife inside the family's luxury Princeton apartment on February 22. The suspect allegedly tore out his brother's eye and ate it, sources said. Matthew faces up to life in prison if convicted on the murder charges. On Saturday, the Hertgen family gathered at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church in Toms River for Joseph's funeral. Plenty of mourners gathered outside the church dressed in black and the casket was carried inside. Source
