At the end of May, St Andreas Church in Salzburg, Austria, hosted a DJ clubbing event for the second year running as part of a 'Long Night of the Churches'.
Two thousand visitors attended the party. Beer was sold at a stall outside the church. Some of the pews broke during the event.
Croatians from the parish recently launched an online petition against such events, entitled 'Churches are not discos' (2,200 signatures so far). Addressed to the Austrian Bishops' Conference, it calls for a ban on secular events in Catholic churches.
Rev. Roland Rasser, the parish priest of St Andreas supports the party night. He admits that alcohol should not have been allowed in the church. "Beer bottles were seen in the church. That caused offence and really bothered me."
However: "It's time for us to evaluate what worked and what didn't, and draw conclusions for the future." He wants a new concept for next year's event.
